10 Tips to Maximize Your Closet Space

DIY & Tips

Follow these 10 tips to maximize your closet space based on 23 years of experience from our very own design professionals.

Having a well-organized closet can make a significant difference in your daily routine. A clutter-free and efficiently arranged closet not only saves you time in the morning but also ensures that your clothes and accessories remain in good condition. If you find yourself struggling with a cramped and chaotic closet, fear not – there are plenty of do-it-yourself (DIY) solutions to maximize your closet space and bring order to the chaos.

Declutter & Donate

Before diving into DIY solutions, take the time to declutter your closet. Assess each item and ask yourself if it’s something you wear or use regularly. If not, consider donating or selling it. Reducing the number of items in your closet immediately creates more space for the essentials.

Invest in Slim Hangers

Switch out bulky hangers for slim, non-slip varieties. These hangers not only save space but also prevent clothes from slipping off. Consider using uniform hangers to create a streamlined look, making it easier to spot items and maintain a neat appearance.

Shoe Organizers

Shoes can take up a significant amount of closet space. Utilize the back of the closet door or a hanging shoe organizer to store shoes efficiently. This not only frees up floor space but also keeps your footwear easily accessible.

Utilize Shelf Dividers

If your closet has shelves, use dividers to keep stacks of clothes or accessories neat and separated. This prevents items from toppling over and makes it easier to locate what you need.

DIY Hooks and Pegs

Install hooks or pegs on the inside of closet doors or walls to hang accessories, bags, or hats. This creative use of vertical space can help declutter shelves and rods, providing more room for hanging clothes.

Double-Up with Tension Rods

Install tension rods to create a second tier for hanging clothes. This simple DIY solution instantly doubles the hanging space in your closet, making it ideal for shorter items like shirts and blouses.

DIY Drawer Dividers

Customize your drawer space by creating DIY dividers. You can use cardboard, foam board, or even old shoeboxes to separate socks, underwear, and accessories. This prevents items from becoming jumbled and makes it easier to maintain order.

Under-Bed Storage

If your closet space is limited, consider utilizing under-bed storage. Store seasonal items, shoes, or accessories in bins or drawers under the bed to free up valuable closet space.

Floating Shelves

Install floating shelves above hanging rods to store items like hats, bags, or folded clothes. This adds extra storage without taking up floor space and allows for easy visibility of your belongings.

Rolling Carts or Bins:

Maximize floor space with rolling carts or bins. These can be easily pulled in and out, offering additional storage for shoes, accessories, or folded clothes. Opt for transparent bins to quickly identify the contents.
